Water on a slab floor has nowhere to go but sideways

Nearly every house in Frisco sits on a concrete slab, so water that reaches the floor doesn't drain away into a crawlspace. It spreads under laminate and engineered wood, wicks up into drywall and cabinet bases, and finds the next room through the gap under the door. Extraction is about getting that water out before it has time to travel.

Contractors use submersible pumps for deep water in garages and sunken rooms, then portable or truck-mounted extractors with floor wands for carpet and hard floors. Carpet can often be saved if it is extracted within a day or so and the pad is replaced; floating laminate rarely survives.

What to do first

  • Stop the source at the fixture valve or the main shutoff, if it is safe.
  • Stay out of standing water near outlets, extension cords or appliances.
  • Lift furniture onto foil or blocks and move rugs, electronics and paperwork out of the wet area.
  • A wet/dry shop vac is fine for small spills on tile. Don't use a household vacuum on water.
  • Take photos and video before anything is moved or thrown out.

What water extraction involves

What a restoration contractor should do, so you know what to expect and what to ask.

Pumping deep water

Submersible pumps move inches of water out of garages, media rooms and sunken living areas before the extractors go in.

Carpet and pad extraction

Weighted extraction tools press water out of carpet and pad. The pad is usually replaced; the carpet sometimes stays.

Hard floors

Squeegee wands pull water off tile, vinyl plank and wood, including out of grout lines and from under cabinet toe kicks.

Checking where it went

Moisture readings around the wet area show whether water reached the walls, the next room or under the flooring.

Clean or contaminated?

Water from a supply line is handled differently from water that came up a drain, out of a toilet or in from the yard.

Handing over to drying

Once free water is out, air movers and dehumidifiers take over. Extraction alone never makes a building dry.

Questions

Water Extraction: common questions

Can wet carpet be saved?

Often, if the water was clean and it is extracted within a day or two. The pad underneath is usually replaced. Carpet soaked by sewage or by runoff from outside normally can't be saved.

How long does extraction take?

A room or two usually takes an hour or two. The drying that follows takes days, not hours.

The water is already gone. Do I still need extraction?

If it soaked into carpet, pad or under flooring, you at least need a moisture check. A dry-looking floor on a slab can still be holding water underneath.
